Lossy vs lossless
Lossy formats (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus) make files much smaller by discarding sounds you are unlikely to hear. Lossless formats (WAV, FLAC) keep every sample. Converting a lossy file to a lossless one makes it bigger but does not bring back what was removed. Converting lossless to lossy is where you save the most space.
Quality settings
For lossy formats you can pick 96 to 320 kbps. Speech sounds clear at 96 kbps, especially with Mono ticked. Music sounds good at 192 kbps and excellent at 256 to 320 kbps. Opus is capped at 256 kbps, which is already far above what it needs. WAV and FLAC ignore the bitrate because they do not discard anything.
Old phone and WhatsApp audio
Voice recordings from older phones are often AMR, and WhatsApp voice notes are Opus inside an .ogg or .opus file. Some computers cannot play these. Convert them to MP3 here and they will open anywhere.

Sample rate and channels
The converter keeps the original sample rate where the output format supports it, so a 44.1 kHz source stays 44.1 kHz. Opus always works at 48 kHz internally and is resampled automatically. Stereo stays stereo unless you tick Mono.
