How do I compress a PDF to under 1 MB?

How to use Compress PDF to 1 MB

Make a PDF smaller than 1 MB
1 MB is a frequent limit on job portals, university and visa applications, insurance claim forms and many email systems' comfortable size. It is generous enough to keep scans and photos looking good, so compression to 1 MB is usually barely visible. This page is preset to 1024 KB (1 MB).
Gentle by default
FixDoks tries the lightest settings first and only compresses harder if it has to. For most files that means images are reduced to around 150 to 200 dpi, which is sharper than most screens and still prints well. Text, tables and line drawings are never rasterised or blurred.

MB or MiB?
Some websites count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes and others as 1,048,576 bytes (1024 KB). This page targets 1024 KB. If a portal is strict about 1,000 KB, change the target to 1000, or 950 to leave a safety margin.
When 1 MB is not reachable
Very long scans (100+ pages) may not fit in 1 MB while staying readable. You will get the smallest version possible with a note. Options then are grayscale, removing pages you do not need with Remove PDF Pages, or splitting the file into several parts.
Check before submitting
Portals differ in their limits and allowed formats, and some change their rules between application cycles. Confirm the requirement in the official notification or on the upload page.
CVs and portfolios under 1 MB
Job portals commonly cap CV uploads at 1 or 2 MB. A CV exported from Word is usually tiny, but adding a photo or designing it in an image-heavy template can push it over. Compressing to 1 MB keeps your photo looking good while staying within the limit. For design portfolios, check that artwork still looks sharp at 100% zoom after compression, and use the Light level instead if detail matters.
Two files instead of one
If a long scan will not fit, many portals allow a second upload or an additional documents section. Splitting the file in two at a sensible point, such as between chapters or documents, keeps both parts clear.
