How does conversion work?
Each unit is stored as an exact multiple of one base unit, such as the metre for length or the kilogram for weight. To convert, the tool multiplies your value by the "from" factor and divides by the "to" factor. The international definitions are exact: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m. Temperature is different because the scales have different zero points, so it uses formulas instead of a single factor.
Worked example: flat size in square feet to square metres
A flat is advertised as 1,200 sq ft. One square foot is 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m = 0.09290304 m². So 1,200 × 0.09290304 = 111.48 m². Going the other way, 1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft.
Indian land and weight units
- Square yard (gaj): 1 gaj = 9 sq ft = 0.836 m². Plot sizes in north India are often quoted in gaj.
- Cent: one hundredth of an acre, 435.6 sq ft, common in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
- Guntha: one fortieth of an acre, 1,089 sq ft, used in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.
- Tola: about 11.66 g, still used for gold. Jewellers today quote gold in grams, often per 10 g.
- Quintal: 100 kg, used for crop prices and MSP.
Units like bigha, biswa and kanal vary from state to state, and even district to district, so they are not included. Check the local land records office for the value used in your area.
Why does a 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
Drive makers use decimal units: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows reports sizes in binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) but labels them GB. 1012 ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 931.3, so nothing is missing. Select TB and GiB above to see it.
