How do I rotate a sideways photo the right way up?

Why photos end up sideways
Phones do not actually rotate the pixels when you hold them sideways. They save the picture in the sensor's orientation and add a small tag saying "show this rotated". Phones and modern browsers read the tag, but some older programs, printers and upload forms ignore it, so the photo appears on its side. Rotating it here writes the pixels the right way up, so it looks correct everywhere.
Quick rotation
90 and 180 degree turns are exact and lossless in terms of geometry: no pixels are stretched or cropped. The width and height swap for 90 degree turns. Apply the same rotation to a whole batch of scans or photos in one go.
Straighten a tilted photo
Use the custom angle slider for small corrections, such as a horizon that leans by 3 degrees or a document photographed at a slant. Rotating by an angle that is not a multiple of 90 makes the picture's corners stick out, so the canvas grows to fit and the empty corners are filled with white, black or transparency. Crop them away afterwards with the crop tool if you want a clean rectangle.
Mirror at the same time
Tick Also mirror to flip the image horizontally as part of the same step, which is useful for selfies where text appears reversed. For flipping only, use the flip image tool.
Output format
Files keep their original format. JPG files are re-saved at high quality. If you choose a transparent corner fill for an angled rotation, the output is saved as PNG because JPG cannot store transparency.
Rotating scanned documents
Phone scans and photos of documents often come out sideways or upside down, which makes them awkward to read and can confuse the reviewers of an online application. Rotate the pages here before converting them to PDF or uploading them. For pages that are only slightly skewed, a correction of 1 to 3 degrees with the custom slider makes text lines horizontal again, and a light crop afterwards hides the filled corners.
Batch rules
Every image in the list gets the same rotation. If some photos need a different turn, process them in separate groups. The preview always shows the first image in the list.
Rotate and then resize
After a 90 degree turn the width and height swap, so a 4000 × 3000 photo becomes 3000 × 4000. If a form needs a particular size, rotate first and then use the resizer.
