Things to check
Most documents convert perfectly. A few LibreOffice-specific features do not exist in Word and are approximated: complex frame layouts may shift slightly, Basic macros are not carried over, and fonts that Word users do not have will be substituted on their computer. For a layout that cannot move at all, send a PDF instead with ODT to PDF.
Tips for a smooth round trip
- Use widely available fonts such as Liberation Serif/Sans (metric-compatible with Times New Roman and Arial), Carlito (Calibri-compatible) or the Noto family.
- Prefer styles over manual formatting; styles translate most reliably between the two formats.
- If a document goes back and forth often, agree on one format for editing and convert only at the end.

Working with colleagues who use Word
If you write in LibreOffice and your team uses Microsoft Word, convert the final draft to DOCX before sending, and ask colleagues to send edits back as DOCX with Track Changes switched on. LibreOffice opens DOCX with tracked changes well, so you can review and accept their edits and keep working without losing comments. For the final version that goes to a client or portal, a PDF is usually the safest choice.
