Why ODT?

ODT (OpenDocument Text) is an open ISO standard for documents, used natively by LibreOffice and OpenOffice. Several government bodies and public institutions around the world, including some Indian state and central agencies, have adopted open standards policies that favour ODF formats for documents. Good to know

• Fonts: Word documents often use Calibri and Cambria. LibreOffice substitutes metric-compatible Carlito and Caladea, so line breaks and page counts stay the same.
• Macros: Word VBA macros are not carried over.
• SmartArt and some charts may be converted to static drawings.

Old DOC and RTF files

Moving an office to LibreOffice

Schools, NGOs and small offices that switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice often have years of Word documents. LibreOffice opens DOCX directly, so conversion is not required, but converting important templates and frequently edited files to ODT avoids small formatting shifts each time they are saved. Start with letterheads, forms and templates, check them once, and use the ODT versions from then on.

Files keep their original names with the new .odt extension, so they slot straight into your existing folders.

Google Docs and ODT

Google Docs can also download documents as ODT (File > Download > OpenDocument Format). If your document lives in Google Docs, that is the quickest route. For Word files on your computer or phone, use this converter. If the ODT will be edited by several people, agree on common fonts first.

Checking the result

Open the ODT in LibreOffice Writer and scroll through it once. Page count and line breaks should match the Word original when standard fonts are used.
