SSC Live Photo Capture: How to Pass It First Time on Phone or Webcam

To pass SSC's live photo capture on the first try, use a well-lit spot with a plain background, hold the camera at eye level, remove any cap, mask or glasses, and keep your entire face inside the frame the module draws on screen. These exact points come from the official SSC notice instructions for the live capture step.

What the notice actually tells you to do

SSC's own instructions for the application photo, used across CGL, CHSL, GD Constable and other exams on the current portal, list five specific things to get right during the live capture: find a place with good light and a plain background, keep the camera at eye level, face the camera directly and look straight ahead, keep your face fully inside the delineated area without being too close or too far, and do not wear a cap, mask or glasses/spectacles. Setting up before you even open the form

1. Choose a spot facing a window for soft daylight, or set up two lamps angled from either side to avoid a harsh shadow across your face.
2. Sit or stand in front of a plain wall, or hang a plain sheet behind you if your room is busy or cluttered.
3. Position your laptop or phone so the camera sits at roughly eye level, propped on books if needed, rather than looking down at a laptop on a low table or up at a phone held below your chin.
4. Clean the camera lens; a smudged webcam or phone lens on a device that has not been used for photos in a while is a common, easily fixed cause of a soft or hazy capture.
5. Remove any cap, mask, glasses or anything else covering part of your face before the capture step, exactly as the notice instructs. The GD Constable 2026 notice also says not to wear earphones or any device.

During the capture itself

• Look straight at the camera, not at the screen slightly above or below it, since this is what "look straight ahead" in the instructions is checking for.
• Keep your face centred and fully inside the box or outline the module draws, not too close and not too far from the camera.
• Keep a neutral, natural expression; avoid a big smile, since most ID-style photo checks expect a calm, frontal expression.
• Hold still for a second after the shutter appears to fire, since a slight motion blur can make an otherwise good frame look unclear.

If the capture keeps failing or looking unclear

A dim room is the single most common reason a live capture looks unclear even when everything else is done correctly. Add more light rather than trying to fix a dark photo afterward, since the module captures and locks in the photo immediately with no editing step. If a webcam consistently produces a blurry or grainy image regardless of lighting, use the mySSC app on an Android phone instead. The CGL 2026 notice says candidates who cannot capture the photo on a webcam can scan the QR code on the Upload Documents page to download the app from the Play Store and capture it on a mobile device.

What happens if the photo does not match on exam day

The notices say your appearance in the examination should be as per the photograph in the application form, and that applications with photographs not in line with the instructions are liable to be rejected (candidates who completed Aadhaar-based authentication are not rejected on this ground). A capture where your face is angled away, partly covered, or poorly lit invites trouble later. Getting the capture right the first time, rather than treating it as a formality, saves potential hassle later on exam day.

Practising the framing before it counts

It helps to rehearse the setup beforehand rather than discovering a lighting or framing problem for the first time during the actual form. Open your camera app on its own first, check how your face looks in the same spot, at the same time of day, under the same lighting you plan to use for the real application, and adjust anything that looks off, whether that is moving a lamp, wiping the lens, or repositioning your chair, before you sit down to fill the actual form.

If you wear glasses every day

Since spectacles are not allowed during the capture, decide in advance whether you can comfortably see the screen and follow the on-screen prompts without them for the short time the capture takes. If your eyesight makes this difficult, ask someone to sit alongside you to read out the on-screen instructions while you keep your glasses off just for the few seconds the actual photo is taken.

Checklist before you start the application

• Good, even light and a plain background arranged in advance.
• Camera at eye level, lens cleaned.
• No cap, mask or glasses.
• A stable internet connection, so the live capture step does not freeze or need repeating under time pressure.
• A quiet moment to do this calmly rather than squeezed in during a rushed, noisy session at a busy cyber cafe.
