How to turn on HD before sending
- Open the individual or group chat.
- To send an existing photo, open the attachment menu, tap Gallery and select the photos or videos.
- In the preview, tap the HD icon and choose HD quality instead of Standard quality.
- Add a caption if you like, then tap send. If you are on mobile data, WhatsApp may ask "Continue without WiFi?"; tap Continue to send in HD anyway.

Which one should you actually use
For most everyday sharing, family photos, casual pictures, event snaps, HD media is the better balance: it looks close to the original while still behaving like a normal shared photo in the chat. Reserve Document for cases where exact pixel accuracy matters: a scanned form, a screenshot with small text you need someone to read clearly, or a photo you or the recipient plans to print. If you are unsure, sending as Document is always the safer choice for anything official.
If your phone saves photos in HEIC format, common on newer iPhones, convert to JPG first with the HEIC to JPG converter if the recipient is on an older Android phone that may not open a HEIC file properly, regardless of whether you send it as media or as a document.
