What is HEIC?
iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. HEIC keeps good quality at about half the size of a JPG, which saves storage on your phone. The problem is compatibility: many Windows PCs, Android phones, websites, government portals and online forms cannot open or accept HEIC files.

Privacy of location data
iPhone photos often contain GPS coordinates. The converted JPG does not carry over this metadata, so it is safer to share.
