How do I convert an old PPT file to PPTX?

Bring old presentations up to date
PPT was PowerPoint's file format from 1997 to 2003. Those old lecture decks, training presentations and company profiles still open, but PowerPoint puts them in Compatibility Mode, Google Slides sometimes struggles with them, and many LMS and upload systems now want PPTX. Converting gives you a modern file that is usually smaller and easier to keep editing.

What may change

Refreshing an old deck
Old 4:3 presentations look boxed-in on modern widescreen displays. After converting to PPTX, open the deck in PowerPoint and use Design > Slide Size > Widescreen, choosing Ensure Fit to keep content in proportion. You can then apply a current theme to give the deck a new look without rebuilding every slide. Check each slide afterwards, since images and text boxes placed near the edges may need a small nudge.
PPTX files are also easier to open on phones and tablets, so the converted deck is ready for sharing on WhatsApp or email.
Fonts on old decks
Many old presentations used fonts such as Tahoma or Century Gothic that may not be installed everywhere. Where a font is missing, a similar font is used, so check headings for line breaks. Embedded fonts are kept when the original file included them, and file names stay the same apart from the new extension.
Charts and embedded objects
Charts made in old PowerPoint usually convert into editable modern charts. Objects embedded from other programs, such as old Excel sheets or equation editor formulas, may appear as pictures. They still show correctly, but you would need to recreate them to edit the values.
