How to use OCR PDF: Make a Scanned PDF Searchable

  1. Click Select scanned PDFs or images and choose your scan.
  2. Pick the document language, for example Hindi + English for a bilingual form.
  3. Choose a searchable PDF, a text file or both, then click Run OCR and download.

What does OCR do?

A scanned PDF is just a stack of photos. You cannot search it with Ctrl+F, select a sentence, or copy a number out of it. OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in the images and adds an invisible text layer exactly on top of them. The PDF looks the same as before, but now it is searchable, you can highlight and copy text, and screen readers can read it aloud.

Indian and world languages

FixDoks uses the Tesseract OCR engine with trained models for English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi (Gurmukhi), Urdu, Arabic, French, German and Spanish. For documents that mix a regional language with English, which is common on Indian forms, certificates and government letters, choose the combined option such as Hindi + English. Picking the right language matters more than anything else for accuracy.

Three output options

  • Searchable PDF: your original pages with a hidden text layer. Best for archiving and sharing.
  • Plain text: just the recognised text in a .txt file, page by page. Best for copying into an email or document.
  • Both: a ZIP with the searchable PDF and the text file.

Pages that already contain real text are left untouched, so mixed documents (some typed pages, some scanned) are handled correctly. Tick Redo OCR only if an earlier OCR result was poor and you want to replace it.

Getting accurate results

  • Scan at 300 dpi if you can. Blurry phone photos and very low resolution scans give poor text.
  • Pages that are sideways or upside down are rotated automatically, but badly skewed photos should be retaken flat.
  • Printed text works well. Handwriting is generally not recognised.
  • Always proofread numbers such as amounts, dates and ID numbers before relying on them.

Next steps

After OCR you can convert the searchable PDF to an editable document with PDF to Word, pull tables into a spreadsheet with PDF to Excel, or make an archive copy with PDF to PDF/A. For a single photo where you only need the text, Image to Text runs entirely in your browser.

OCR for government letters and certificates

Scanned notices, land records, certificates and court orders in Indian languages are hard to search and quote. After OCR you can press Ctrl+F in any PDF viewer to find a name, survey number or date, and copy passages into a reply or application. For bilingual documents, the combined language option recognises both scripts on the same page.

Your file is processed on our server and deleted immediately after the result is returned.
