How is age calculated?
Your age is the time from your date of birth to a chosen date, counted in whole years, then whole months, then remaining days. The calculator follows the usual method:
- Subtract the birth year from the current year.
- Subtract the birth month from the current month. If the result is negative, take one year away and add 12 months.
- Subtract the birth day from the current day. If the result is negative, take one month away and add the number of days in the previous month.
Worked example
Date of birth: 15 August 1995. Age on 26 September 2026.
- Years: 2026 − 1995 = 31
- Months: 9 − 8 = 1
- Days: 26 − 15 = 11
- Age = 31 years, 1 month, 11 days
If the day part is negative, for example birth on the 28th and today the 10th, one month is borrowed. The borrowed month is the one just before the current month, so the count respects 28, 29, 30 and 31 day months and leap years.
Age on a cut-off date for exams and jobs
Government exams and recruitment in India set an age limit "as on" a specific date, for example 1 August or 1 January of the exam year. Being one day over can make a candidate ineligible, so the exact figure matters. Enter the cut-off date from the official notification in the second box. Remember that notifications often allow age relaxation for reserved categories, ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities. Check the relaxation rules in the notification itself.
Born on 29 February?
If you were born on a leap day, the calculator treats your birthday in non-leap years as 28 February for the next birthday countdown, which is the common practice. Your age in years still increases once a year.
Age in months for school admission
Many schools and state education departments set a minimum age for nursery and Class 1 as on a date such as 31 March or 1 June. Enter that date as the second date and read the full years and months. The same applies to sports age groups and competitive events that set an "under 14" or "under 17" limit on a fixed date.
